What is Pálinka?
Pálinka is a traditional, strong fruit spirit with origins in Hungary. It was invented in the Middle Ages.
While completely new to the United States, pálinka has been produced in Hungary for about 700 years. It is made from fruits that grow in Hungary and is free of any additional ingredients. Pálinka is traditionally made from plums, cherries, grapes, pears, apples and peaches but can actually be made out of any kind of fruit that grows in Hungary.

How is Pálinka Made?
Making pálinka involves a double distillation process that results in an alcohol content of the final product between 37.5% and 86% ABV (Between 75 and 172 Proof), making this a very strong but tasty liquor.
Pálinka is a very unique and strong alcoholic beverage celebrated as one of Hungary’s favorite beverages. Making pálinka has become an art with many residents making it at home and drinking it as a way to begin or end a meal. However, the process for making commercial pálinka is practiced by qualified Master Distillers who understand the nuances of making the best quality fruit spirits.

Hungary is a country in central Europe that spans almost 36,000 square miles. It has been inhabited by a succession of different cultural and ethnic groups including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars. There are currently approximately 10 million inhabitants living there. Hungary has a colorful history and reached the height of its cultural and political power in the 15th century. At the turn of the 18th century it joined Austria to form the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which at the time, was a major European power.
Why is Pálinka only produced in Hungary?
Pálinka can only be manufactured in Hungary due, primarily, to legal reasons. Although this liquor was first invented in Hungary in the Middle Ages, only this century it was awarded Protected Domestic Origin by the European Union.
